In the vacuum of space, the sound of the ship’s sirens are lost, but the flashing lights reflect and rebound over the dust and debris, glaring red.
Jack opens his eyes, and for a long, dark instant, he does not know where he is. He breaths in air that tastes like smoke and the crackle of lightning in a storm, the kind he remembers from his childhood back on Earth.
He knows who he is. He is Jack Mayweather, scientist and researcher; Staff Sergeant in the Capital Star’s Exploration Force. He has been in the black for three weeks now with his crew, and their journey is only a third of the way done.
It takes him a moment, but he eventually notices that his spaceship is on fire.
